Genetic factors can affect a person's risk for heart disease. But the good news is, this disease is largely preventable. We may have heard wise advice that says, to keep your heart healthy, you must eat nutritious food and exercise regularly.
But it's not just lifestyle changes you can do to reduce your risk of heart disease. What you drink can also make a difference. The following are some suggested types of drinks that can help maintain a healthy heart:
Maybe this sounds strange at first sight. But did you know that coffee has a higher antioxidant activity than cocoa or tea? Consuming the right amount of coffee can inhibit inflammation and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
A long-term and large-scale study, involving more than 83,000 women, showed that drinking 2 cups of coffee every day cut the risk of stroke by 20 percent lower than those who drank little or no coffee.
Suggestion: Drinking between 2 and 4 cups of coffee per day is considered moderate. But if you experience insomnia, restlessness and fatigue, just drink one glass.
2. Pomegranate juice
Recently the reputation of pomegranate juice has skyrocketed and has attracted nutritional researchers. Why not, experts from the University of California found that, pomegranate juice's antioxidant capacity is three times higher than red wine and green tea. Even early research suggests that regular consumption of pomegranate juice can lower cholesterol, reduce arterial plaque (a risk factor for heart disease), and increase blood flow to the heart.
Suggestion: If possible, avoid added sweeteners when making pomegranate juice.
3. Red wine
Red wine contains many compounds that can protect heart health, including resveratrol. Resveratrol has antioxidant properties that can protect the blood vessels in the heart as well as help prevent the formation of blood clots. Some evidence also suggests that moderate consumption of red wine can increase HDL (good cholesterol).
Suggestion: For women, it is recommended not more than 1.5 glasses per day. As for the men, no more than 2 glasses.
4. Black tea
Black tea is produced through a fermentation process after the leaves are harvested and then dried. This processing changes the chemical composition of the leaves, thus producing several powerful antioxidants that help support heart health. Black tea has been shown to reduce the risk of stroke, reduce LDL (bad cholesterol), improve blood vessel function, and increase blood flow in the coronary arteries.
Suggestion: The longer you dip the tea, the greater the phytochemical benefits you will get. Therefore, serving tea with hot water will be much better while keeping the antioxidant content in check. Drinking several cups of black tea every day can help reduce the risk of heart disease.
5. Green tea
Like black tea, green tea contains many antioxidants that are good for the heart. The main differences is that green tea is not fermentated. A 2004 study shows that drinking green tea in large quantities can prevent the risk of coronary artery disease. There are many studies linking green tea consumption with low cholesterol, prevention of blood clots and stroke.
Suggestion: Drink 1-3 cups of green tea a day.
Dehydration can contribute to several risk factors for coronary heart disease, including thick blood. When you are dehydrated, your blood will become thicker. This condition makes your heart expend more energy to pump blood around the body. In fact, chronic dehydration can lead to hypertension (high blood pressure).
Suggestion: Many experts recommend that at least a day a person should drink 8-10 glasses of water (for adults). But the recommended amount to drink cannot apply to everyone and every condition. To be sure, don't let your body become dehydrated. You can also add lemon juice or juice to warm water for added flavor while also getting its decay and antioxidant benefits.
